Animal Print the New Neutral

Animal prints have hit the runways in a big way and have become a key attention-getting trend.

Animal prints

There are many animal prints that are like leopard, cheetah, snake, zebra, giraffe and many others. Just add a touch of animal print to your fashion assemble and you’ll get a bold, edgy, trendy look. It is easy to wear animal print with almost any out t and for almost any occasion. It seems that animal prints are the new neutral, especially for accessories.
Animal patterns were introduced to high fashion by Christian Dior back in 1947. He created animal print accessories for his muse, breaking the norms and serving as inspiration for others. Later in the ‘60s and the ‘80s, leopard prints were a staple for rock stars and now a wardrobe classic for fashionistas.
In past LUXE articles I’ve mentioned that I love to wear black, but most recently have made a concerted effort to step up my game with more color, designs, and prints. Animal print has been around for a long time, but I never cared that much for it. Clearly, I’ve gotten over it! I now have some great accent pieces and some pretty spectacular accessories because of my new animal print kick. Tops, shoes, and bags in animal prints make my wardrobe more versatile than it has ever been. Yes, animal print is a very distinctive design/print, but it turns out it is a great neutral to use to mix and match.

Ways to wear Animal Print

New to animal print? Interject it into your wardrobe with understated accessories.

You can always add an animal print bag to a monochrome outfit. Snake, cow, giraffe and leopard prints looks great with earth tones, nudes, and red. Zebra print bags with brighter colors. I love the fact that animal print accessories can work for every occasion, and you can style them differently from day to evening.

I love that animal print accessories can work for every occasion.

Keep it Luxe

Make sure your animal prints are in nicer fabrics. Animal print can be perceived as cheap or low-class, so if you work with high-quality fabrics you elevate your look. I found a luxury line of metallic fabrics in a snakeskin print, fell in love with it, and have incorporated it into my Fall 2019 Collection for Portage Embellished Bags.

Keep it Subtle

Use animal print in your accessories by carrying an animal print bag or sport a pair of chic animal print stilettos. Wear a skirt with animal print and pair it with a nude or black pump.

Be Adventurous

Mix and match patterns. Animal prints can be treated as solids. On the runways, you see animal print clothes mixed with other prints and patterns. Wearing a leopard print dresses with zebra print shoes is adventurous.

Mix & Match

Wearing animal print clothes by mixing different kinds of fabrics is a great way to pay with texture. And don't forget about animal prints in various colors. I experiment with different colors and textures in my bag designs, by mixing animal prints with 2-3 different fabrics to create bold and distinctive bags that stand out.
